Austin Monthly’s Top Attorneys list is a peer-driven recognition program designed to identify the most respected attorneys in the Austin area. The selection process involves:

What is Super Lawyers®?

Super Lawyers is a rating service that identifies outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process is rigorous and includes independent research, peer nominations, and evaluations. Only the top 5% of attorneys in each state are selected as Super Lawyers.

What is Rising Stars?

The Rising Stars list is a part of the Super Lawyers selection process, specifically recognizing the top 2.5% of attorneys in each state who are either 40 years old or younger or have been practicing law for 10 years or less. Like Super Lawyers, the Rising Stars selection process includes independent research, peer nominations, and evaluations.

The Selection Process

The Super Lawyers and Rising Stars selection process is a comprehensive, multi-step procedure that ensures only the most exceptional attorneys are recognized. The process includes:

1. Peer Nominations: Lawyers are invited to nominate their peers whom they have personally observed in action, either as opposing counsel or co-counsel, or through other firsthand observations in the courtroom.
2. Independent Research: The Super Lawyers research team evaluates each nominee based on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement, including verdicts and settlements, experience, honors and awards, and pro bono and community service.
3. Peer Evaluation: Nominees are grouped into practice areas, and those with the highest point totals from the first two steps serve on a blue ribbon panel to review and rate their peers.
4. Final Selection: The final list of Super Lawyers and Rising Stars is created by combining the scores from the independent research and peer evaluations. Only the top 5% of attorneys in each state are selected as Super Lawyers, while the Rising Stars list recognizes no more than 2.5% of attorneys in each state.
